Our school uses a thematic approach to learning. Themes are chosen based on their developmental appropriateness and the interests of each class. All classes include themes relating to our bodies, families, and community; animals and nature; and various topics about how things work.
Many of the materials in the classroom change with the theme and reflect the interests and diversity of the children. Our rooms are arranged in learning centers so that children are naturally supported in their play choices and are able to actively participate in the care and maintenance of the room.
Each school day includes an hour of choice play time to allow in-depth exploration and creation. The theme-based offerings during this time include art activities, some cooking experiences, dramatic role play, blocks, puzzles, games, stories and story writing, computer and board games, science and nature activities and more.
Our day also includes group times for children to share their ideas and comments as well as to sing, learn finger plays, and hear stories together. This balance between individual choice and shared group experiences allows our children to gain a deeper understanding about themselves and an appreciation for the strengths of others.
A typical day might include:
CHOICE PLAY: Every class includes an hour of choice playtime, allowing for in-depth exploration and creation. Offerings during this time include: art activities, cooking, role-play, blocks, puzzles, stories, writing, computer and board games, science and nature activities.
LARGE MUSCLE PLAY: Each day has a time scheduled at our wonderful playground or inside at our large motor area filled with tents, tunnels, balls, and scooters.
